Neuro refers to your neurology; Linguistic refers to language; programming refers to how that neural language functions. In other words, learning NLP is like learning the language of your own mind!
Let’s make this simpler with an example.
Have you ever tried to communicate with someone who didn’t speak your language, and they couldn’t understand you? The classic example of this is when someone goes out to a restaurant in a Foreign country and they think they ordered steak, but when the food shows up, it turns out they actually asked for liver stew.
This is the kind of relationship that most of us have with our own unconscious mind. We might think we are “ordering up” more money, a happy, healthy relationship, peace with our family members, and being able to stick to a healthy diet…but unless that’s what showing up, then something is probably getting lost in translation.
Most people seek therapy because they have some undesired behaviour such as smoking, a quick temper, over-eating, phobic reaction and other habits and compulsions that they wish to change.
For example, someone might experience a panic attack when asked to make a presentation to work colleagues.
They know logically that they should be able to speak with confidence but for some reason their body has responded differently to this logic.
Many existing therapies such as hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT and EMDR offer effective ways of dealings with these brain responses and behaviours but not all therapies work for everyone all of the time.
Technique - use
The NLP technique uses everyday skills and tools in order to carry out the following change work within the sub-conscious (automated) part of the mind
DISSOCIATION; Identify problem, Identify the emotion attached to that, work with the mind to remove or detach links
REFRAMING; Changing perceptions built up and putting new associations with them
ANCHORING; changing or removing anchors you have created in order to no longer feel the same when a situation arises
RAPPORT; Works on your rapport with your world, people and things in order to be at ease with situations
CHANGING BELIEFS; Often we have a set of beliefs built up over time and experience that are fundamentally wrong, NLP works to switch and change them making your vision of how and what something is different - these can be very limiting beliefs that need changing - you can be the best you there is
